Stuff that didn’t make the cut (Cause its crap)

The Detours Spread.

I don’t like spreads. I thought this wasn’t too bad for a first attempt, but it got pushed aside in favor of other projects. I’m skeptical on what I was thinking with the Weird drop shadow title…

Frequently Asked Questions about Highway 63.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I was working on this, but this is possibly the most boring thing I have EVER created. It looks like an essay! I’m pretty sure the blog post threw me off, I was confused what kind of graphics were allowed, So I just went with none. I also struggled with editing the type and managing the large amount of it. I feel If I attempted it now, after working with other type related projects we did after this.

Any other Project progress can be found somewhere on the blog!

Mid Term Portfolio!

So, Midterms have rolled around. Lovely.

I really wasnt prepared for this, and despite working for 2-3 days straight, I’m still missing some small elements. But the important thing is I have the VAST MAJORITY OF THEM.

1. Typography Poster

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 4.5 Hours

This was the first project we did (I think), and It was the first okay I got. I’d say Im still not happy with it, Its nice in an very ordered and neat fashion, but it lacks a certain flair. Either way, I enjoy the messing around with limited elements (Black/White and only letters). On a side note, I enjoy the Giant A. Kinda wish I printed it if only to see the       size of it.

2. Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 6.5 Hours

I struggled a lot with the graphic for this project. While making the Andy Warhol style pop art was fun, it came with lots of tiny problems, mainly white showing up where it has no business to be. The idea behind the project was the Andy Warhol quote relating to money and making a business from your artwork. I spent a lot of time reworking this project, and went slightly over my budget :(

3. Summer Block Course Promotion

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 3 Hours

My original idea for this poster actually took between 1.5 – 2 of the hours I spent on this project. Eventually I gave up on it and remade this, which came together REALLY quickly. And amazingly, Rusty liked and okay-ed it. It was horribly shocking - In a good way. Again, I used an awesome quote I found as my concept for the poster. I used a nice calming blue to compliment the image I used. Overall this project went well.

4. Smokey the Bear

Time Budget: 9 Hours for Posters, 3 for Animated Gif / I used: 7.5 Hours for the posters

I really liked my concept for this project, I think it’s strong and well conveyed. In the creation process the main problem I ran into was resolution issues, and I ran into it SEVERAL times. After creating the posters and imagery I used in them, I spent almost an hour working on the images to make sure they didn’t appear pixelated. This had to go through several rounds with Rusty and several alterations, but I think it was worth it.

5. Herpetology Club

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 5 Hours

This went through several changes before it reached here. It was originally horizontal format, and with imagery instead of an illustration. I liked my type and concept, that is something that hasn’t changed since the beginning. A lot of the time on this project was spent messing around with the illustration, and I feel like it still isn’t done. Unfortunately I never managed to sit down and spend more time on it, If I did I would have definitively been over the budget.

6. Native American Heritage Month

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 6.5 Hours

I spent a decent amount of time on this project, mostly on revisions and small alterations. I went with a theme of ‘knowledge of the elders’. This meant getting some awesome quotes of elder wisdom. I think it went really well with the black and white portrait images. Again like on a previous project, I ran into issues of resolution and sizing. How ever Rusty provided these images so hmmmm! Wonder about that….

7. Happiness Article

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 5.5

I did a number of revisions on this. I struggled a lot with utilizing my space well, and being aggressive with my headline title. Eventually I just messed around with some nice blue colors and went with boxes. And you know what? It worked. I feel that it still needs something more, maybe some nice graphics? I’m just not sure.. Rusty pointed out that he would okay this if I held a gun against his held…. So cheerful.

8. Stress Article

Time Budget: 6 Hours / I used: 6.5

I spent a lot of time revising this and messing around with the type. I tried several different versions of the opening header on the first page. Rusty eventually suggested bumping up the size a lot, which seems to work well. I had to enlarge the image a certain amount, but some light Gaussian blur seems to have come together well. I really liked the Image I used and I think it works well with the red coloring.

Conclusion: I’ve got together everything here for the Portfolio except for the animated banners, which I haven’t managed ot fit into the 3 days of furious work :(

I casualty of procrastination no doubt.

Smokey the Bear.

The three poster series advertising Smokey the Bear for the National Geographic. I went with a concept that used the same tagline, but with different imagery in each. The idea is the burning forest reflected in the animals eyes, they watch as their homes go up in flames. This was fairly easy to accomplish in Photoshop, it wasn’t as easy however as finding images big enough.

I also just remembered that I haven’t credited Google for the images… I’ll fix that in the next revisions.

One becomes three.

So there I was on Friday, a completed Poster finished only hours after class. I felt proud. THEN, Rusty told us he wanted three versions of the concept as a poster series. LOVELY.

I spread my concept out across three layouts, I really just changed up the image and the Piece of wisdom shown on each was different. Acording to Rusty this is nearing completion which is a nice change. I just need to change up the layout of the information at the bottom, incorporate a color into the design and soften the hard edge of the solid color with a design reminiscent of the Native Americans.

What.

Just read the blog, and Rusty has been sneaking and held back some info on the Native American thing. hmm, Was kinda stumped on how to turn my poster into a set of three, but I’m pretty sure I can use another two profile close ups of Elders and some Wisdom filled quotes to go with them. As for the Animated banner Gif, I’ll probably go with having the text fade in. Thats good enough, right?

RIGHT?

The salvation known as weeks end.

I got the Native Ameircan Heritage month out of the way super quickly. I had an idea of what I wanted to do in class, using one of the images Rusty oh so generously provided. I then found some Native American wisdom to go with it and went about setting it out nicely.

The copy with information at the bottom still needs work I think, and I havent incorporated a spot color yet, I wonder if I can get away without using one?

We will see.

Big ol’ Bertha.

So, This is the Herpetology poster and the revised edition. Rusty liked Bertha, but suggested a vertical format, and an actual illustration/image instead of the placeholder one I used. The colors I used for the snake looked duller in Paint Tool Sai, It looks almost too vivid in the finished poster. The pink colors I chose also coincided with the date (Feb 14th) in a very subtle way.
